Nigeria looking to bounce back
After reaching the final of AFCON 2023, expectations remain high for Nigeria despite recent disappointment at international level. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a setback that has increased pressure ahead of this tournament.
Still, Nigeria arrive in Morocco as one of the strongest squads in the competition, with proven experience, physical presence and attacking depth.
Head coach Éric Chelle has called for focus ahead of the opener:
“Our first opponent is ourselves. We must concentrate on our game and block out distractions.”
Tanzania aiming to break new ground
Tanzania are competing in their fourth Africa Cup of Nations, and have qualified for back-to-back editions for the first time in their history.
Although the Taifa Stars have never progressed beyond the group stage, they arrive with renewed ambition. A coaching change shortly before the tournament saw Miguel Gamondi take charge, following the departure of Hemed Suleiman.
The opening match against Nigeria will be a major test, but also an opportunity to challenge one of Africa’s traditional heavyweights.
Head-to-head: Nigeria vs Tanzania
Nigeria and Tanzania have met on limited occasions at senior international level, with the Super Eagles holding the historical advantage. However, AFCON openers often produce surprises, and Tanzania will be eager to upset the favourites.
A crucial Group C opener
With Tunisia and Uganda also in Group C, every point will matter. A strong start could set the tone for the remainder of the group stage.
